These are working boats...and they work hard. Almost everything coming into Venice travels by boat within the city.

This photo reminds us that Venice is very much a city of stone and water.
The iron work is exemplary...and notice the facial relief integrated into the arch.

This beautiful boat is peeking out, waiting to be taken for a hard-working spin.

I just love this simple scene. The colors are marvelous, and the boat is just ever so cute.

Here is a boldly colored boat wating on its capitan. And this captain must have a jolly spirit to have prepared his boat in such a charming way.

A Grand Canal palazzo is reflected in this perfectly polished deck of a beautiful water taxi.

This is iconic Venice. This is a view we will see often as we walk the Venetian calle...an arched bridge, reflective water, and wooden boats.

Stone, brick, iron, wood, water...all of these combine in this photo of the laborer's entrance to a Venetian home -- the watergate.

I can convert any of my photos to a digital 'painting'. Understand that no paints are used in this artistic reproduction...it is all done by me digitally, using a digital 'paint' brush, etc.
Go ahead and order this print if you want (it will not have the writing on the print). Otherwise, use the Contact page to tell my which photo you would like to have reproduced as a ditgiital painting. I will send you a proof at no cost, and the digital painting version will be the same price as a non-painting version.
Looks best as a canvas gallery wrap!

Glide up in your private gondola and step right into your home.
What is not to like about this scene...the water and submerged steps, the double door entrance, and the beautiful ironwork. And don't forget the spider web door treatment.

I would love to meet the architect/designer of this watergate so that I could congratulate them.
This is one of my favorite water entrances in Venice.

Like many of the water entrances in Venice, this one is functional. Guests at the Albergo Internationale can arrive and depart by water taxi. This means not having to drag luggage over stones and steps.

Just look at those rich colors. This one reproduces very well as a metal print.

Another rustic, well-worn water entrance that just might...or might not...still be used today.

This arched canal exit has a bit of mystery to it...just where does that passage go?
And here's proof that there are indeed fish in the Venetian canals!

Here's a water entrance with a bit of natutical charm.
Note the porthole-like window that holds a model sailboat.

Any idea what this is? This is one of the most important places in Venice!
This is the Squero San Trovaso, where gondolas are both made, cleaned and repaired.
A gondola is dragged up the sloping surface and then it is placed on sawhorses (boathorses?) so the craftsmen can work on it.

They say we don’t dream in color, but in black and white.
I have chosen to produce many of the photos you see in my galleries in black and white, but nearly any of the color photos can be produced as a black and white print.
If you want a particular photo printed in black and white that isn’t displayed that way in my gallery, just let me know.

This is the Venice of which we dream. Such a sterotypical scene that includes a small canal, wooden boats, reflections, arches. It's all there.

You have just enjoyed a nice dinner at your favorite Venice restaurant.
Tonight's entertainment is the dinner itself, and then a nice quiet walk after midnight when the city is oh, so quiet. You seem to be lost, but that's alright when you have such nice views as this one.
All you could wish for is that your hotel is not yet close.

Oh, how I just love this scene. It brings up such great memories of Venice.
Looking at this photo is what I need to get my dreams of Italy going tonight.

OK, you've probably figured out that this isn't an actual snapshot of a typical day on the Grand Canal.
For this photo, I spent almost an hour taking over 80 images. Then I combined just the right portions of those images to create this photo, which is also known as "A Busy Day on the Grand Canal".
This photo was selected by National Geographic senior editor Kurt Mutchler for a gallery show called 'The Art of Travel Photography'.
And who is that happy couple at the very bottom-center of the photo? I'll never tell.

Barberpole poles can be found all along the canals of Venice. This one has brilliant red, white, and blue.

Early morning...sunrise...the perfect location for the perfect photo! The calm of the Grand Canal has not yet been broken by the many boats that will ply its waters as the day progresses.
This photo, also known as 'Sunrise on the Grand Canal', is an award winner.
