Gondolas are made of eight different kinds of wood, and it takes 280 pieces to build one gondola. The oar is made of beech wood.

Did you know that one side of the gondola is made longer than the other? This asymmetry resists the tendency to turn towards the left as the gondolier rows the gondola.
If you take this gondola for a spin, this interesting little fellow will be looking over your shoulder the whole ride -- you'd better behave.

This front part of a gondola is called a "fero da prorà” or “dol fin“.
The six prongs of the comb are called 'rebbi' and they represent the six districts or sestieri (one-sixth) of Venice. The prong aimed to the rear represents the Giudecca island.
